PEMDAS — What's the Next Step?

Choose the next operation or the next expression. You only simplify one operation at a time.

  1. Grouping symbolsWork from the innermost group outward.
  2. ExponentsAn exponent tells how many equal factors to multiply.
  3. Multiplication & DivisionEqual priority: use left to right.
  4. Addition & SubtractionEqual priority: use left to right.

Multiplication does not automatically precede division. Addition does not automatically precede subtraction.

What about other valid mathematical methods?

These questions ask for one step using the standard convention. Addition can be reordered after rewriting subtraction as addition of signed terms: 12 − 5 + 3 = 12 + (−5) + 3. The sign stays with its term. Subtraction itself is not commutative.

Five correct answers complete each level. Three misses lead to a guided review and a fresh start of that same level. Earlier completed levels stay completed. No timer.
