Math symbols are instructions. Each symbol tells you to calculate, compare, group, or describe something.
Why should I care?
Understanding the symbols helps you know what a problem is asking before you begin calculating.
Symbol group 1
These symbols tell you which calculation to perform.

Both sides have the same value.

Group a part that belongs together.

These symbols appear frequently in Algebra and geometry.
Multiply a value by itself.

Small visual differences can completely change the meaning.
In −5, the sign describes the number. In 8 − 5, it tells you to subtract.
A letter x can represent a number. Use a dot or parentheses for multiplication when an x-variable is nearby.
A decimal point sits low. A multiplication dot is centered between the numbers.
The small point faces the smaller number. The wide opening faces the larger number.
= means exactly equal. ≈ means close after rounding.
Both symbols group parts together. Work inside the innermost grouping first.

For example, read 3(x + 2) as “three times the quantity x plus two.” Saying the symbols often makes the next step clearer.
