Coordinate Plane Guide
The coordinate plane is a grid used to show exact locations. Every point has an address written as an ordered pair: (x, y).
Remember:Move along the x-axis first, then move along the y-axis. Think: “across, then up or down.”

Know the parts
Coordinate Plane Vocabulary
y-axis
The vertical line that moves down and up.
Origin
The center where both axes meet: (0, 0).
(-2, 4)
Ordered Pair
A point’s address. Move with x first, then y.
Sign patterns
The Four Quadrants
Quadrant I
Both the x-value and y-value are positive.
Example: (3, 2)Quadrant II
The x-value is negative, but the y-value is positive.
Example: (-3, 2)Quadrant III
Both the x-value and y-value are negative.
Example: (-3, -2)Quadrant IV
The x-value is positive, but the y-value is negative.
Example: (3, -2)Step by step
Plot the Point (-3, 2)
Step 1: Start
Begin at the origin, (0, 0).
Start at the center.
Step 2: Move x
The x-value is -3, so move 3 spaces left.
Move left 3.
Step 3: Move y
The y-value is 2, so move 2 spaces up.
Move up 2.
Step 4: Plot
Place a point at your final location.
Point: (-3, 2)

Watch out
Common Mistakes
- Switching x and y. Always move x first.
- Moving right for a negative x-value.
- Calling a point on an axis part of a quadrant.
